Established in 1867, the Yardleyville Protective Company recovered stolen horses and other personal property for people throughout the area. In a sense, it was an early insurance company as it would pay to cover the cost in case the property was not found.

Members still participate in traditions, including the honorary “hanging.” This is not as lethal as it sounds. One person is chosen for their contributions to the community and then “hanged.”
