The Newtown Business Association is hosting its annual “Welcome Day” this Sunday, May 5 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. People can expect plenty of entertainment and exciting activities to go around right on Sycamore Street.
This Street Fair with Flair has been a staple tradition for roughly 20 years, according to NBA President Bill Sheffer. He says the street fair is designed to promote Newtown and have people see its stores and restaurants.
“We encourage people to come and explore the town,” Sheffer said. “Not just the main street where we have our festival, but while they’re in town, check out the shops in the borough. We have the historic district to enjoy. The historic State Street area will be having a sidewalk sale.”
Upwards of 10,000 people turn out each year to interact with the 229 vendors, artists, and crafters signed up to display their goods. In addition, this year’s event will feature three entertainment stages.
“This year we’re really excited with our Rising Star Singing Contest to have Kim Allen of Sister Sledge, famous for “We Are Family,” Sheffer said. “She’s going to be one of the judges for the contest. We have 18 contestants singing for prize money with an adult category and a student category, and that’s always a lot of fun.”
The singing contest begins at 12:15 p.m. at Fred Beans Ford of Newtown, located at 10 North Sycamore Street. The winner of each category will earn a $150 prize.
Sheffer, who is also Vice President of The First National Bank and Trust of Newtown, hopes everyone can make it out to Newtown Sunday.
“It’s a great day for family and friends. Bring out your youngsters because we have a lot of activities for them,” Sheffer said. “It’s free, it’s a great community event, and we’re very proud. We’ve worked on this since January to put it together, and it’s rain or shine.”
Welcome Day has won several awards. First, it was voted Best Business or Chamber Event in 2017 for the Bucks Happening List. It then earned Best Family Event in 2018 from the same list.
