Nine people, including seven children, are recovering from their injuries after lightning struck a tree at the Dolphin Swim Club in Feasterville.
Heavy rain hit the area suddenly around 5 p.m. and people went to a tent for cover. But then, a tree collapsed onto the tent with people inside.
Witnesses described charred branches and a chaotic scene.
“As they were trying to get away, the branches fell,” one witness told CBS3.
“There was a lot of leaves, branches, and debris inside the tent, and I also saw a large tree branch or tree limb that appeared to be severely charred or burnt,” Lower Southampton Township Supervisor Raymond Weldie told abc6.
The swim club staff reportedly began trying to help victims before emergency personnel arrived.
Three people were taken to the hospital with severe injuries, though others with minor injuries had bumps and bruises. The pool will remain closed Monday for cleanup.
