More than 325 businesses are working together in Bucks County to make sure children in need get to open something on Christmas. In its 13th year with Toys For Tots, WBCB 1490 is partnering with seven businesses this year to collect presents as part of Marine Toys For Tots.
Though it is a national program, Toys For Tots Bucks Coordinator Staff Sergeant Kevin Miller says the Bucks branch depends on donations from residents in the community.
“The program is set up so it’s local toys for local kids. Everything is collected locally and distributed locally,” Miller said. “Nothing goes out of the Bucks County area unless we have a tremendous surplus, but we make sure we have met our own needs first.”
WBCB and its partners collected 360 toys, 17 books, and 35 stockings last year as part of the county effort to supply 7,000 local children with toys. Bucks county brought in more than 26,000 toys last year.
“Nothing is insignificant,” Miller said. “However, because of limited resources, both with volunteers and collection boxes, we do try to make sure the boxes are in key geographic spots that will generate the biggest bank for the buck.”
The Bucks branch has grown considerably since 1993 when it was just three businesses and two volunteers. The goal for each business location is to bring in at least 25 to 30 toys for the season. All toys must be unwrapped, unopened, and in their original containers or packaging.
The last day to drop off donations for most locations is this Sunday, December 9th. However, WBCB will not be collecting many of its boxes until later in the week.
