Update: Fitzpatrick Campaign Spokesperson Kate Constantini responded with a statement late Wednesday night. “The fact that Matt Braynard and the Andy Meehan campaign would reference the Congressman’s hero and late brother in their response to a poll shows how utterly classless and heartless they both are.”
A new poll released Wednesday shows Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick leading Republican primary opponent Andy Meehan by a wide margin.
The poll, from WPA Intelligence and the Environmental Defense Fund Action committee, has Fitzpatrick with a 39 point lead. However, it also shows 20% of Republican voters in Bucks are undecided.
It found 59% of Republican voters would cast their ballot for Fitzpatrick today, while only 19% would vote for Meehan.
Additionally, the poll included a survey of how favorable voters see Fitzpatrick.
It shows Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick with a 72% favorability rating among Republican primary voters, along with a 77% favorability rating among “Trump Republicans.”
“This polling makes it clear that Brian Fitzpatrick has earned broad support from Bucks County voters,” said Joe Bonfiglio, President of EDF Action. “Voters like the job Representative Fitzpatrick is doing in Congress. His record of protecting Pennsylvania’s natural resources and fighting Washington special interests fits this district like a glove.”
But Matt Braynard, an advisor for Andy Meehan, called the numbers the weakest he’s seen for an incumbent Republican who did not lose. He said Meehan’s campaign still had two months to educated voters on Fitzpatrick’s “extreme position on the issues.”
“Brian Fitzpatrick benefits primarily from good will towards his late brother who previously held the seat, good will he has squandered,” said Braynard.
The Fitzpatrick campaign responded, taking issue with bringing the late Congressman Michael Fitzpatrick into the matter. Michael Fitzpatrick passed away in January after a long battle with cancer.
“The fact that Matt Braynard and the Andy Meehan campaign would reference the Congressman’s hero and late brother in their response to a poll shows how utterly classless and heartless they both are,” said Fitzpatrick Campaign Spokesperson Kate Constantini.
402 likely voters gave their input for the poll, which is available in full here. The results have a 4.9% margin of error.
