The Rotary Club of Shady Brook was named as the leading area organization during the 2017 Salvation Army’s annual Red Kettle Drive.

The Bell Ringer Award was presented to the Rotary Club at a ceremony at the Middletown Country Club. The six Saturday’s before Christmas, the Shady Brook-based organization raised more than $3,000.

Red Kettles were set up outside the J.C. Penny’s and Macy’s at Oxford Valley Mall. All the money raised will go towards the local community. Every day of the year, The Salvation Army provides basic needs, housing, youth services, rehabilitation, counseling, and spiritual care to people.

The Salvation Army is the first to arrive and the last to leave when tragedy strikes and Club President Ira Sherman sees that.

“It’s very nice to be able to help during this time of need,” Sherman said.

The Rotary Club of Shady Brook holds events throughout the year including a golf outing, various fundraisers, and weekly meetings.

“I had a feeling that we’d win,” Sherman said. “A lot of people really went out many, many weekends and in the cold and bad weather.”
