The Bensalem Township Police Department says tips from the public are the reason it has a suspect in custody after a fatal hit-and-run incident earlier this week.
“Wow!! You folks are amazing. Your tips led us directly to a house in Bensalem where we recovered the vehicle involved in this crash,” the BTPD posted in all caps in a press release. “We have also identified and arrested the driver of the striking vehicle, Richard McCausland.”
Now McCausland, 21, faces one count of homicide by vehicle and related charges.
A witness found a body in the street near the intersection of Hulmeville Road and Kings Avenue around 6 a.m. Monday morning, according to authorities.
The victim was later identified as Timothy McGuire, 38. He lived on Ogden Avenue in Bensalem.
Police concluded McGuire was struck at around 2:30 a.m., meaning his body would have been in the street for around three and a half hours. Broken parts of a green vehicle were scattered nearby, giving investigators a lead.
The local community quickly responded with tips to police and an arrest was made within 24 hours.
Authorities say McCausland was speeding with a suspended license at the time. He remains in Bucks County Correctional Facility in lieu of 10% of $500,000.
