12-year-old Girl Suffers Accidental Shooting Wound

A Project Childsafe gun lock, provided free to Bucks County residents as part of "Ben's Campaign."

A young girl accidentally shot herself in the hand with a loaded handgun in Bristol Borough Monday.

The victim believed she was handling an unloaded weapon, according to the Bristol Borough Police. Officers met the girl at Lower Bucks Hospital.

Medical professionals transferred her to St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children, though the victim is expected to recover.

Bristol Borough partakes in “Ben’s Campaign” to provide free gun locks for children. The program is named for Benjamin Smith, who accidentally shot himself with a firearm at the age of 2.

“The Police urge firearm owners to be vigilant with the securing of weapons, especially when children are present,” police said.

Free gun locks are available at Bristol Borough Police Headquarters.
